Meece was one of two sons - a brother died early in life - of Drewry Meece, Sr. (1886-1949), and the former Mauda Wade (1891-1963),[1] born in Russell Springs in Russell County in southern Kentucky. Called to the ministry at the age of seventeen, Meece was the pastor of several churches in Russell County but had been affiliated with the  Lowell Avenue Baptist Church in Campbellsville while on the CU faculty and in retirement thereafter.[2]

In 1948, Meece received an Associate of Arts degree from Methodist-affiliated Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Kentucky. In 1950, he earned a Bachelor of Arts from Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky. He received a master's degree in education in 1957 and a doctorate, also in education, from the University of Kentucky at Lexington. In 1970, he was awarded a master of divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.[2]

He first taught in the public schools of Russell County, then at Georgetown College, and from 1965 to 1991 at Baptist-affiliated Campbellsville University. He also was an instructor at various times at Lindsey Wilson College, Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, and the Roman Catholic former St. Catharine College near Springfield in Washington County, Kentucky.[2]

Meece was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and the University of Kentucky Alumni Association He made thirteen trips abroad with students to Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Athens, Greece, and Rome. He made four other trips to China from 1995 to 1999 to teach English in the summer. He operated a nursing home ministry at the Fair Oaks Rest Home in Jamestown, Kentucky.[2]

On April 25, 1965, he wed the former Shirley Baker (1929-2021), a native of Berea, Kentucky, the daughter of Taylor P. and Marie Gay Baker, and a graduate of the University of Kentucky. She retired as an English professor at Campbellsville University. The Meeces are interred along with his parents at the Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery in Russell Springs.[3]

Rhonda Sims, a long-term educational official for the State of Kentucky, in an interview in 2015 recalls Meece as one of her mentors in the field. Sims said that Meece and several other mentors all shared "the common characteristics of caring for students as individuals, having strong content knowledge, holding high expectations, providing feedback and supports, and serving as learning coaches."[4]
