-In 2008, Buchanan published a book entitled, Churchill, Hitler and the Unnecessary War: How Britain Lost Its Empire and the West Lost the World in which he criticized British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain for granting security guarantees to Poland and unnecessarily causing World War II, costing the lives of more than 50 million people. He compared former President George W. Bush's decision on NATO expansion to include seven additional Eastern European countries including the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as equally unwise. He warned that NATO expansion into the former Soviet Union could lead the US into nuclear war with the Russian Federation despite the fact that the US has never had any vital interests in Eastern Europe.
