Barbara Joan Streisand was born on April 24, 1942 (age 84), in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York. As a high school student she sang in the choir and graduated near the top of her class.
A nightclub singer in her late teens, Streisand appeared in a number of off-Broadway productions and performed in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village after shortening her name to Barbra Streisand.
In 1962 Columbia Records signed Barbra resulting in her very first album, “The Barbra Streisand Album” winning two Grammy Awards. She would record more than 60 albums, each of them becoming best sellers. “The Broadway Album” in 1985 turned Platinum and was “Album of the Year” earning Barbra a “Best Female Vocalist” Grammy, one of ten she would collect during her career.
In the spring of 1964, “People” would become her first gold single. With five chart topping #1 hits:
- “The Way We Were” in 1973
- “Evergreen” in 1976
- “Woman in Love” in 1980
