In 1986, he was hired by then-U.S. Representative Dick Cheney to work on the Iran-Contra Investigation. After that he worked as a prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington D.C. In 1990, Buck joined the Colorado U.S. Attorney's Office where he became the Chief of the Criminal Division. Throughout his years in Colorado, he has served as an instructor at the University of Denver Law School and for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy.
In late August 2020, Rep. Buck joined Sen. Rand Paul in calling for a DOJ investigation into the 2020 Leftwing riots after the latter was assaulted in Washington, D.C. by a violent far-left mob.[2] Buck also noted that the riots will "absolutely" backfire on the Democrats in Colorado,[3] where gun sales have previously rose sharply.[4]
He did however express condemnation towards the idea of the America First Caucus.[5] Although the organization seemed to have been a media hoax and he fell for the bait.[6]
He was also the sole Freedom Caucus member to vote to keep his friend Liz Cheney in the group.[7]
Vetting Buck
The support Buck received during his election campaign put pressure on Democrats to undermine him. Under the pressure of months of campaigning, Buck said, "God, what am I supposed to do?" when confronted by a Democratic worker. With foul language, he suggested that birthers in the Tea Party need to stop asking questions about Obama's birth certificate while on camera.[8] He did not question the certificate and was more concerned about $13 trillion federal debt.
Buck left office before the 2024 election. In November 2023, he joined sixty-nine other Republicans to vote to establish a new $300 million building to house the FBI.[9]
