The Paleocene epoch (period of time) dates from approximately 65 million years ago, the time of the K-T Event at the end of the Cretaceous period, in which the dinosaurs and many other groups of preistoric animals became extinct, until the start of the Eocene epoch 55 million years ago, when a major global warming event [1] triggered further mass extinctions.

Geography and climate

Geographically, in the Northern hemisphere, the supercontinent Laurasia remained a single entity, but the former supercontinent Gondwanaland had already split into the four Southern hemisphere continents we have today. The epoch was slightly cooler than the Cretaceous, but still sufficient to permit the growth of subtropical vegetation at high latitudes, mostly of modern species or closely related forms. Flowering plants proliferated.

Biology

Despite the extinction of the dinosaurs, the warm climate still favoured large numbers of smaller reptiles, including many crocodiles. Many modern bird types appeared for the first time. Huge, flightless carnivorous Terror birds up to ten feet tall, such as Diatryma, were among the major land predators of the epoch. Sharks replaced the extinct marine reptiles as the top sea predators.

The Paleocene is notable for the diversification and domination of mammals for the first time; they were generally small, but included representative of all three living mammalian sub-classes, monotremes, marsupials and placental mammals, as well as the extinct multituberculates, small herbivores up to the size of a beaver found in the Northern hemisphere only [2].

Young earth creationists view

Young earth creationists believe that the evolutionary geological timescale is in error. [4][5][6] They believe that the earth is young and has multiple lines of evidence from the field of geology showing that the earth is young. [7][8][9][10][11] Also, young earth creationists assert that there is an abundance of scientific arguments in addition to geology showing the earth and universe are both approximately 6,000 years in age.[12][13][14] In addition, they have a number of arguments against the position of an extremely old age for the earth and the universe.[15][16][17]
