Tyne & Wear is a Metropolitan County established in 1974 and incorporating parts of Northumberland and County Durham. It includes the five districts Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland. Tyne & Wear Metropolitan County Council was abolished on 1 April 1986, but the five authorities cooperate in the provision of certain services to the county, including passenger transport (notably the Tyne & Wear Metro), museums, and fire and civil defence.
