What it really means is that there isn't a lot of valid historical writings to go covering a very long passage of time (largely due to widespread illiteracy); and those writings tend to be connected with the church. So in the so-called "Enlightened" Era, atheist bigots tended to just dismiss those writings as being from a "dark" and sinister time.
