Bilbo is the title character of The Hobbit and also a pivotal character in Lord of the Rings. Bilbo never married, but rather adopted his orphaned nephew, Frodo Baggins (Son of Drogo Baggins) as his heir. He was the son of Bungo Baggins and Belledonna Took, and master of Bag End after his father.
Through much of the beginning of his life, he lived a quiet life in Hobbiton, a hobbit village. The Hobbit is the story of how he along with 13 dwarves and a wizard went on a difficult adventure and killed the dragon Smaug. A key point is this adventure was when Bilbo found a magic ring which could make him invisible.
After his 111tieth birthday party, Bilbo used this ring to disappear from his guests, leaving Frodo in custody of The Ring before beginning his travels again. In his absence, Frodo received his inheritance of Bag End, Bilbo's possessions and finances.
Later Gandalf discovered that the ring was made by Sauron, and needed to be destroyed before Sauron got it back. The attempt to destroy it is the primary story in The Lord of The Rings.
