Black Republicans comprise about 1% of GOP voters, but include the Republican National Chairman Michael Steele, elected in 2009. Black Republicans support the Republican party for many reasons, including a belief that the Republican party supports conservative values, is pro-business, and had a positive role in ending slavery in the 1860s and supporting the civil rights movement of the 1960s.
