Compulsory vaccination exists as a condition of admission to public school in 33 states of the United States. Vaccine manufacturers lobby for these laws to maximize revenue on their products.[1]
New vaccines have been required of schoolchildren for diseases that do not spread in school(HPV) or are rarely dangerous to schoolchildren, such as chickenpox, and flu. Vaccination has also been required for diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus measles, mumps, rubella, hib, meningococcal disease, pneumococcal disease, hepatitis B and hepatitis A.[Citation Needed]
All states have a religious exemption from compulsory vaccination except California, Mississippi and West Virginia. Also, 17 states have a philosophical exemption, for anyone who does not want to vaccinate.[2]
