Civil Rights Movement

The civil rights movement occurred in the United States from about 1953 to 1968, as courts and Congress changed laws to end segregation of African Americans in public places and make it easier for them to vote.

In the 1960s and 1970s, many courts order busing of children in a largely unsuccessful attempt to integrate public schools. Some busing from that era continues to the present.
