A craftsman is a very skilled worker in a traditional manufacturing occupation such as carpentry, plumbing, electrician, blacksmith, masonry or cobbling, where a synergy of quality, beauty and durability creates an ideal product. The term craftsmanship now refers to primarily handmade items which excel expectations and have a higher value than mass-produced goods.
Craftsmen were traditionally assembled into guilds, where they had a tiered training system, from apprentice to journeyman to master craftsman. The craft of the craftsman was usually inherited by his sons.
