The Boeing 787 "Dreamliner" is a wide-body twinjet longhaul airliner.
Fuel Economy
The Boeing 787 i the most efficient Boeing passenger jet in terms of fuel economy per seat, with the 787's efficiency being the reason Norwegian Long Haul was able to attain the title of "environmentally friendly transatlantic airline" several years in a row.[2]
Battery Problems and Grounding
After multiple battery fires in several Boeing 787 aircraft,[3] the two largest operators, All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines, grounded their 787 fleet on January 16, 2013. That same day the FAA ordered all Boeing 787 aircraft grounded in an emergency airworthiness directive until the battery problem could be fixed. Both the Directorate General of Civil Aviation in Chile and The Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation also grounded their respective country's 787s. After test flights and modifications to the battery were made the FAA lifted the airworthiness directive on the 787 and flights resumed. The Japan Civil Aviation Bureau reportedly wanted the battery redesigned entirely but allowed flights to resume. The National Transportation Safety Board laid fault primarily on: the makers of the battery, GS Yuasa; Boeing, for failing to assess the safety of the battery; and the FAA for ignoring the hazard.[4]
