Anatoly Karpov

Anatoly Karpov was the chess world champion from 1975 to 1985, and again as the FIDE world champion from 1993 to 1999. He is third all-time in being the highest-rated player in the world for more than 100 months.

He is known for his fabulous endgame technique, his versatility in style, his focus on positional play, and his ability to adapt to opponent's styles.

Bobby Fischer declined to defend his world title against Karpov due to a dispute about the playing conditions, and Karpov thereby became world champion by default.

Karpov started a chess school in Lindsborg, Kansas, and at 30 other locations in Europe, the Middle East, and Scandinavia.
