Dred Scott (c. 1799 - September 17, 1858) was an American Slave who is best known for the Dred Scott Trial.

Despite suffering a horrific judicial defeat in the litigation, on May 26, 1857 he and wife were officially freed in St. Louis Circuit Court. Dred Scott then worked as a porter at Barnum's Hotel in downtown St. Louis, and lived in the city near Carr Street.
Tragically, he died of tuberculosis little more than a year later, on September 17, 1858.
