Philip Rivers

Philip Rivers is a retired American football quarterback and high school football coach. He is considered among the Greatest Conservative Sports Stars.

Born and raised in northern Alabama, he was lightly recruited out of high school: neither of the powerhouse football programs in Alabama (Auburn and Alabama) were interested in him. He ended up signing with NC State, where he played from the 2000-2003 seasons.

He was projected to be the second quarterback selected in the 2004 NFL Draft behind Eli Manning, and would end up being involved in a trade with Manning (the then San Diego Chargers had the #1 overall pick; when Manning announced that he would not sign with them, the New York Giants would select Rivers and trade him plus draft picks for Manning).

Rivers would play 16 seasons with the Chargers franchise before finishing the 2020 season with the Indianapolis Colts, whereupon he announced his retirement and became the head football coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama. However, during the 2025 season, the Colts (who had lost their starting quarterback to a season-ending injury and had little experienced depth on a team with playoff hopes) would re-sign Rivers, who would go on to be on the active roster for the last four games of the season, playing in three (he would sit the final game). It would result in Rivers being no longer eligible for the NFL Hall of Fame; at the time, he had made the semifinal list for the Class of 2026.

Rivers is a devout Catholic: both his father and his future wife were converts to Catholicism. As of 2025 he has ten children and one grandchild. His oldest son (who he coaches) is a top prospect in the high school Class of 2027.
