Andy, it's amusing that you are chiding the "New American Bible" for its use of an awkward compound negative in Mark 6:4 (Οὐκ ἔστιν προφήτης ἄτιμος εἰ μὴ ἐν τῇ πατρίδι αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν τοῖς συγγενεῦσιν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ αὐτοῦ), when the CBP uses exactly the same translation for the parallel verse in Matthew 13:57 (Οὐκ ἔστιν προφήτης ἄτιμος εἰ μὴ ἐν τῇ πατρίδι καὶ ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ αὐτοῦ)! --AugustO 05:18, 18 February 2015 (EST)

The word "language" is a term of Latin origin, the English (England's "language") equivalent would be speech, from Old English spræc, from Old High German sprahha. The Modern German term is Sprache.

Likewise, the phrase "English language (England's language language)" pisses me off as much as the phrase "ATM machine (automatic teller machine machine)". ATM, automatic teller machine, and even the odder "AT machine" are preferred.

Likewise, it is not "England's language" as above, but "England's speech". "Engels/Angles" --> "English". It is slang. Cazle (talk) 23:00, June 16, 2024 (EDT)
