Independent Baptist

Independent Baptist or Independent Fundamentalist Baptist churches are Christian Protestant churches which generally adhere to conservative Baptist beliefs and do not join larger Baptist groups, particularly the more liberal ones. Independent Baptist churches make up a small number of the Baptist churches in the United States and a small number of people who consider themselves Baptists belong to an Independent Baptist church.

The denomination was founded by J. Frank Norris, paster of large church in Fort Worth who left the Southern Baptist Convention in 1926 after he was accused of murder. Notable members include John R. Rice, Peter Ruckman, Bob Jones Jr., and Bob Jones III. Jerry Falwell began his ministry as an Independent Baptist, but later joined the Southern Baptist Convention. Bob Jones University is affiliated with this denomination.
