A sidebar in a legal proceeding is a conference held between the judge and lawyers, usually in the courtroom, out of earshot of the jury and spectators.

During a sidebar the judge and attorneys attempt confidentially to work out disputes without any influence on the impressions of the jury and spectators. However, a court reporter is present to transcribe what is said during a sidebar to preserve the conversation for use on appeal, if any.
