William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was an American author. His works include The Rise of Silas Lapham (1885) and A Traveler from Altruria (1894).[1]

Howells was a practicing Christian socialist,[2] who was keenly influenced by the works of Leo Tolstoy and Edward Bellamy.[3] His father William Cooper Howells was an Owenite.[4] When the Haymarket Affair occurred in Chicago, Howells sided with the anarchists.[5] The Haymarket Affair led Howells to write the book A Hazard of New Fortunes (1890).
