Perjury

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Dataclarifier (talk | contribs) at 19:26, September 10, 2017. It may differ significantly from current revision.

Perjury is the criminal offence of knowingly making a false statement under oath about a material fact. Not every falsehood offered as testimony under oath is perjury. Perjury has three motivations

  1. To escape punishment
  2. To cause injury
  3. To express contempt of court

Conscious perjury is a sin.

See Exodus 20:16 with multiple commentaries "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor."
