Dewey Decimal Classification

The Dewey Decimal Classification, popularly known as the Dewey Decimal System, is a classification system for the of organization of non-fiction library books created by librarian Melvil Dewey (1851-1931) in the 19th century. The system consists of 10 broad categories, which are further subdivided. For example, books in the 200 category deal with religion, and books dealing specifically with Hinduism are located at 294.5.[1]
These are the ten categories:[2]
- 000 - Generalities
- 100 - Philosophy and Psychology
- 200 - Religion
- 300 - Social Sciences
- 400 - Language
- 500 - Natural Sciences and Mathematics
- 600 - Technology
- 700 - The Arts
- 800 - Literature
- 900 - Geography and History
