The Temple Mount, biblical Mount Moriah, is a hill in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is the former site of the Temple of Solomon in pre-exile times, as well as Herod's Temple, which stood in the time of Jesus. Since Herod's time, the mount has been fortified as a large stone platform. The Temple Mount today bears on the site the Islamic Dome of the Rock (Arabic: ٠سجد Ùبة اÙصخرة, Masjid Qubbat As-Sakhrah), built between 687-691 A.D. on the order of Abd al-Malik (the ninth Caliph); and the Al-Aqsa Mosque (built c. 710).
