Checkmate ends a game of chess by placing the opponent's king in check without any available move to escape check.

It is a metaphor commonly applied to politics, whereby one side obtains a strategic victory over the other.

Quick Checkmate

Checkmate can happen as quickly as two, three, or four moves in chess.[1] The most common of these is the Scholar's mate, whereby White checkmates by placing its Queen on f7.
