Chess has contributed many new terms, usually conservative, to our popular culture. Here is a growing list of them:

  • pawn (someone easily manipulated by another more powerful, as the "Pelosi pawn" Liz Cheney)
  • checkmate
  • draw
  • endgame
  • fork
  • gambit
  • jeopardy
  • stalemate
  • pin
  • sacrifice (not uniquely originating with chess, but popularized by it)
  • your move, next move, and best move
