DOGE
DOGE stands for the Department of Government Efficiency. DOGE is a presidential advisory commission in the Execitive Offices of the White House. DOGE wants to cut up to $2 trillion in annual spending.[1]
Background
Within hours of taking office on 20 January, 2025 President Donald Trump signed an executive order changing the United States Digital Service (USDS) created in 2014 by Barack Obama to the United States DOGE Service (USDS).[2] DOGE was originally founded within the Executive offices of the White House with a staff of 20. On February 7, 2025 President Trump gave DOGE chief Elon Musk authority to add an extra 45 staff, recruited from Musk's various tech businesses.
Elon Musk
Both Elon Musk and Donald Trump have suggested that Musk could hold a seat in Trump's cabinet if he's reelected - namely through a Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Vivek Ramaswamy, "the co-leader of DOGE along with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, teased plans for âmass reductionsâ in the federal workforce and said the group will make recommendations on âa real-time basis.â (See: Vivek Ramaswamy teases âmass reductionsâ under new DOGE â and expects certain agencies will be âdeleted outrightâ, New York Post, 2024).

In 2025 the United States Department of Justice revealed in a court filing: "Since its creation in 2014 by President Obama, the United States Digital Service ("USDS") has worked with agencies across the Executive Branch to, among other things, improve the federal governmentâs information technology and data organization systems...That mandate was recently revived through an Executive Order issued by President Trump, which redesignated USDS as the U.S. DOGE Service".
