The A49 is a road in western England. Traversing (from south-to-north) Herefordshire, Shropshire, Cheshire and Lancashire, it skirts the Welsh border but never actually enters Wales, with the border being around 2 miles to the west at the closest point. Beginning at Ross-on-Wye, the also road passes through or bypasses the primary destinations of Hereford, Leominster, Shrewsbury, Whitchurch, Warrington and Wigan. The roads northern end is at Bamber Bridge, just south-east of the primary destination Preston. Other notable settlements on the route are Ludlow, Craven Arms, Church Stretton, Tarporley and Newton-le-Willows.
The road, particularly the section through Shropshire, follows part of Iter XII of the Roman Antonine Itinerary.
