High school reading list

9th grade:

• Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper
• Walden by Henry David Thoreau
• The Call of the Wild by Jack London (serialized in The Saturday Evening Post, June 20-July 18, 1903)

Liberal novels which are often required but which induce depression:

• Lord of the Flies by William Golding
• Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

10th grade:

• Animal Farm by George Orwell
• The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (1925)
• The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson (1886)

11th grade:

• 1984 by George Orwell
• The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
• Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors by Piers Paul Read, which describes the inspiring survival of some passengers in the 1972 crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571

Liberal:

• The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne

12th grade:

• Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
• Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
• Turn of the Screw by Henry James (serialized in Collier's Weekly magazine (January 27 – April 16, 1898)
