His Dark Materials is a trilogy of fantasy novels by British author Philip Pullman. The trilogy, which consist of The Northern Lights (The Golden Compass in North America), The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass, center around a girl, Lyra Belacqua and companion Will Parry, who dwell in a universe parallel to ours. The author is a blatant anti-Christian and his books reflect his worldview. For instance, the Christian heaven is made to be a lie, with the "afterlife" consisting of a bleak underworld where human souls, known as daemons, being tormented by harpies, and God being merely an angel created from dust. The books, nonetheless, are quite popular in both the UK and United States among atheistic and anti-Christian communities.
