Montreal
Montreal (also spelled Montréal) is the second largest Canadian city in the Province of Quebec. The city is bilingual and the majority of its people speak both French and English. In fact Montreal is the second largest French speaking city after Paris, France. Montreal is also home to many Irish-Canadians and Jewish-Canadians. For many years Montreal was the largest and most important city in Canada and had many Canadian corporate headquarters; however, as a result of the Quebec separatist movement beginning in the 1970's and climaxing around the 1980 referendum (which never passed) some 300,000 English speaking Montrealers moved, for the most part to Ontario.
The City of Montreal now has a population of 1,620,693 while its Census Metropolitian Area (or CMA) has a population of 3,635,571. [1]
