Derek Hagan

Derek Hagan, born Samantha Whallops, (1934-present) is best known as the first American to have undergone a complete gender reassignment procedure. Samantha had lived a normal life, complete with husband, two children and a career as an accountant. Upon reaching the age of 30, Samantha determined she wanted to be a male and began her procedure.
By 1970, Samantha's procedure had been completed. Samantha spent years working with doctors and surgeons at UPMC Shadyside, a hospital within the University of Pittsburgh network.
Currently, Derek works with the American Civil Liberties Union, actively crusading against sexual discrimination.
