Berkley Earth was created by Richard and Elizabeth Muller in 2010 when they addressed the five major concerns of climate change skeptics. The study released in 2012 addressed alleged biases from data selection, data adjustment, poor station quality, and the urban heat island effect as well as an over reliance on climate modeling by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The analysis showed the issues addressed did not unduly bias the climate record. [1]

Funding

Berkeley Earth is entirely supported through charitable donations. [2] Past and current donors include: ANGA Foundation (American Natural Gas Assoc. Foundation), William K. Bowes, Jr. Foundation, Energy Foundation, The Lee and Juliet Folger Fund, Fund for Innovative Climate and Energy Research (created by Bill Gates), The Ann & Gordon Getty Foundation, Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE)

Peer Review

Peer review confirming the results of the BEST study first appeared by December 2012 when published by Geoinformatics & Geostatistics: An Overview. [3] Numerous other reviews soon followed. [4] [5]

Skeptics View

Anthony Watts, a meteorologist prominent climate change skeptic, provided his own dataset for the study and stated: And, I’m prepared to accept whatever result they produce, even if it proves my premise wrong. I’m taking this bold step because the method has promise. [6] But when the results came out, he changed his position and his website published numerous critiques against Muller and the BEST study. [7]

Watts has received criticism for changing his view even after the results were peer reviewed. [8]
