Manchester Ship Canal

The Manchester Ship Canal was opened in 1894. It consists of two canalized rivers, the Mersey and the Irwell. Smaller seagoing vessels are able to access Salford Quays in Greater Manchester, approximately thirty-six miles inland. Access is available further inland to smaller vessels.
Historically the canal was a major freight route, especially for the textile industry around Greater Manchester. Modern ocean-going vessels are too large to use the canal.
