Proxy war
A Proxy war is a war instigated by a major power which does not itself become involved. Governments sometimes wage proxy wars because they lack domestic and international legal authority to fight a direct conflict.[1]
Colonial America
The American Declaration of Independence charges King George III of Great Britain with using indigenous Native Americans in a proxy war against the Thirteen Colonies:
"He has endeavoured to bring on the Inhabitants of our Frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known Rule of Warfare, is an undistinguished Destruction, of all Ages, Sexes and Conditions." |

By definition, the United States is waging a proxy war against Russia, using Ukrainians as their instrument, with the goal of not ending the war but prolonging it, making the United States a cobelligerent.[2] The United States flooded Ukraine with billions of dollars of sophisticated weaponry, with some of those arms ending up in the hands of neo-Nazi battalions integrated into the Ukrainian government and military. The New York Times admitted that “C.I.A. officers are helping to ensure that crates of weapons are delivered into the hands of vetted Ukrainian military units."[3]
