Tammy Suzanne Green Baldwin (born February 11, 1962)[1] is a United States Senator from Wisconsin having won the seat in the 2012 elections. She is a former member of the U.S. Representative for Wisconsin's 2nd congressional district. She was first elected in 1998. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Baldwin was the first woman elected to Congress from the state of Wisconsin. Openly lesbian, she was also the first openly gay non-incumbent elected to the House of Representatives and is the first openly gay person elected to the Senate. Baldwin voted in favor of ObamaCare.[2]
Backround
Baldwin traces one branch of her family tree back to 1866 in Sauk County, Wisconsin. Her mother and maternal grandparents raised her jointly in Madison, Wisconsin. Tammy graduated first in her class of 510 students at Madison West High School in 1980. She earned an A.B. degree from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1984 with majors in government and mathematics. In 1989, while an active member of the Dane County Board of Supervisors, Tammy earned her J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School. She practiced law from 1989 to 1992.[1] Baldwin served in the Wisconsin Assembly from 1993 to 1999.
