Abdel Bari Atwan (Abd Al-Bari Atwan [عبد الباري عطوان] b. 17 February 1950, Gaza) is the British "Palestinian" propagandist, editor-in-chief of Rai al-Youm. He was the editor-in-chief of the London-based pan-Arab newspaper Al Quds Al Arabi from the founding of the paper in 1989 until July 2013.

He has been glorifying Osama Bin Laden, a fan of Saddam Hussein, supported Jihadi terror, even cheering for an Islamist Iranian genocidal nuclear attack; diminished the Holocaust, among other things.

British media has been gaushing over him for years, such as ultra liberal The Guardian and the libetal BBC, till he was dropped by the BBC in 2022.

Explained already in 2003:[1] "The Abd Al-Bari Atwan [appearing] on CNN is completely different from the Abd Al-Bari Atwan on the Al-Jazeera network or in his Al-Quds Al-Arabi daily", says Munir Al-Mawari in the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Siyassa. "On CNN, Atwan speaks solemnly and with total composure, presenting rational and balanced views. This is in complete contrast with his fuming appearances on Al-Jazeera and in Al-Quds Al-Arabi".

Highlights:

  • In December, 2003, sympathetic to Saddam, Atwan lamented: "We had hoped that he would resist to the last and in the process fall as a martyr... . "This would have been more honourable for him than surrendering to US forces."[4]

  • Sep 2006, Atwan: "The events of 11 September will be remembered as the end of the US empire. This is because all empires collapse when they pursue the arrogance of power."[5]

  • In June 2007, Atwan:[6][7][8] "If Iranian Missiles Hit Israel, I Will Dance in Trafalgar Square."

  • In 2008:[9] praised terror attack on 'Mercaz Harav' Israel (2008) massacring 8 students.

  • In May 2011:[10] "I get worse coverage in the Jewish Chronicle than Hitler would!"

  • In January 2012, Atwan mourned the death of Saddam. Expressed sympathy with the insurgency against the US-led 2003 invasion of Iraq. Commenting on former president Saddam Hussein's execution he said that he would "go to the gallows with his head held high, because he built a strong united Iraq without sectarianism".[12]

  • In July 2012, Atwan praised Assad regime, his "resilience," compares him to his other heroes, Saddam Hussein and Yassir Arafat.[13]

Author:

Palestinian militiamen started the killings in 1975, long before the 1982 Sabra and Shatila massacres. Beit Mellat, Deir Achache, Damour, Saadiyate and many others were peaceful cities and villages where hundreds, if not thousands, of Lebanese were killed on their own land in their own country by armed foreigners, mostly Palestinians and Syrian Muslims.[14]
  • On Sep 19, 2012, belittling the Holocaust, Atwan labeled the Sabra and Shatila massacre (carried out by Christian Lebanese militia in response to Damour massacre) "a Palestinian holoc#ust", part of a long series of “holoc..sts [sic]" inflicted upon Palestinians and Arabs until today, "not by gas ovens but by Israeli F-16 missiles, which are manufactured in the US." As watchdog added: 'Apparently it still bears mentioning that no "F-16 missiles" were involved.'[15]

  • In Feb 2013:[16] praising OBL, "Sheik Osama Bin Laden was a great Man."

  • In June 2013:[17] "Bin Laden was only half a terrorist."[18]

  • In September 2013, Atwan stated: The loss of Syrian chemical weapons is a loss to the Entire Arab Nation.[19]

  • In 2014, in a tweet in Arabic, Atwan downplayed the Holocaust. [20]

  • In 2016, Atwan blamed rather European Leaders, claiming, they encourage Muslims to join ISIS.[21]

  • In March 2020, Atwan: Coronavirus will bring the end of the U.S. empire; let China rise – It Won't be worse than America.[22]

  • In May 2021, during Guardian of Walls, as Hamas, PIJ reined down barrage of rockets on civilians, Atwan: 'The sirens that go off when Hamas rockets hit Ashdod are like a Beethoven symphony to my ears.'[23]

  • In Aug 2021:[24] he claimed that (terror attacks at) 'Kabul airport scenes will happen at Ben Gurion', that Israelis should learn how to swim because their only option to escape "will be the Mediterranean Sea."

  • In March 2022, Atwan: The Ukraine war is a gift from Allah to the Arabs; the Arabs benefit the most from this war; the West is begging us to increase oil production, their lives are in our Hands.[25]

  • In March 2022:[26] Atwan praised the (03/22/2022) ISIS "Palestinian" terror killing in Hadera, Israel.

  • In August 2022, Atwan appears as expressing sympathy for Sir Salman’s assailant.[27] At first, BBC has refused to back down, even after a former Governor of the corporation said[28] its coverage of the Salman Rushdie attack "could amount to glorifying terrorism", the JC can reveal.[29]

  • In Dec 2022, it was reported that the BBC dropped him.[30]

Much of the copious commentary in the Arab papers on the capture of Saddam Hussein focused on the manner in which the deposed Iraqi leader surrendered himself. "Saddam's performance at the moment of his arrest and during his medical check was humiliating and appalling," said Muhammad Abd-al-Hamid in the Palestinian Authority-controlled Al-Ayyam. "This man, who had entered popular legend, looked ... submissive, fragile ... an Arab ruler who put his own personal security before any other considerations."

... This article is alarming, since Atwan is perceived as a legitimate and unbiased analyst by the British media, and is often invited to voice his views in different media platforms," said Lior Ben-Dor, spokesman at the Israeli Embassy in London. "The problem is that when addressing the British public, he tends to hide his true opinions and ideology - his support for terror and the murder of civilians. This article reveals Atwan's real colors, a supporter of fundamentalism and terror, and hence he should be treated accordingly." In an interview on ANB Lebanese television in June, Atwan said, "If the Iranian missiles strike Israel, by God, I will go to Trafalgar Square and dance with delight. "If a war breaks out, where will the Iranians retaliate? If Iran is able to retaliate, it will burn the oil wells, block the Strait of Hormuz, attack the American bases in the Gulf and, God willing, it will attack Israel, as well," he added. Atwan was born in a refugee camp in 1950. He founded the pan-Arab daily in London in 1989, and today it has a circulation of around 50,000. In 1996 he interviewed Osama bin Laden. He is a regular commentator on CNN, Sky News and BBC News.

Apparently it still bears mentioning that no "F-16 missiles" were involved in the Sabra and Shatila massacre, which was carried out by a Christian Lebanese militia contrary to prior [4] and real-time [5] understandings with top IDF commanders. The questions of Israel's indirect responsibility for not anticipating the massacre [6], as well its leadership’s ability to realize what was happening on the ground and intervene on time, both remain disputed [7]. As for the way the civil war in Lebanon influenced the construction of the Sabra and Shatila narrative among Palestinians and Lebanese alike, see for example here [8].

  27. BBC’s defence of Atwan makes its hypocrisy clear, The JC, 2 September, 2022.

Previously the BBC has behaved as if it doesn’t matter what Bari Atwan has said elswhere. This week the JC asked the BBC to respond to his expression of sympathy for Sir Salman’s assailant in the US last month on its own News Channel. Bari Atwan told viewers that the Satanic Verses "is blasphemy completely and it is offensive", that Rushdie "was very, very cruel" and that "to talk about the wives of the Pro-phet is really very, very dangerous...freedom of expression is practiced only to insult Muslims."

Such grotesque views are Bari Atwan’s stock in trade. Indeed, on the same day as as he attacked Sir Salman Rushdie on the BBC, he defended in an online piece Mahmoud Abbas’s refusal to apologise for the mass murder of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

The BBC’s response to its broadcasting these views was to describe Bari Awan’s appearance as "editorially justified".

It went on: "If extreme views are expressed on the BBC, we would always seek to challenge them."

Clearly the BBC considers describing Sir Salman Rushdie as a "very very dangerous" blasphemer is not extreme, since Bari Atwan was not challenged.

  30. Ben Bloch, BBC secretly reforms Arabic news output, The JC, December 8, 2022.

The BBC has introduced a catalogue of reforms to its Arabic news service — including dropping the controversial terrorist sympathiser Abdel Bari Atwan as a pundit — in the wake of widespread criticism of the corporation's output, the JC can reveal. The moves are taking place behind closed doors, even as its Director-General continues to publicly defend Mr Atwan, who has expressed sympathy for Sir Salman Rushdie's attacker and defended the 1972 Munich massacre of Israeli Olympians. "Team leaders in BBC Arabic have told editors to stop using him [Atwan] because he said some problematic things on BBC English," a BBC source said. In response to an open letter, signed by 36 parliamentarians and public figures, demanding the broadcaster drop Atwan after reporting by the JC and media watchdog Camera, BBC Director-General Tim Davie insisted that using the pundit was "in the public interest". However, the JC can disclose that behind the scenes, Arabic editors were informally told to drop him. The source added: "We used to have him on a lot, but we have been told not to." Separately, the broadcaster is rolling out a package of reforms to the department. Amid job losses across the World Service, 70 positions are being cut in BBC Arabic. But at least four Output Monitors are being newly appointed to clean up Arabic language reporting, the source said. "They will watch BBC Arabic TV broadcasts both before they are aired and afterwards," the source said, "and monitor all the digital stuff to make sure it complies with guidelines." The source added: "The problem has been quality control. Attitudes in the Arab world are hostile to Israel, and this has been coming through BBC reporting via local journalists." The reforms — which suggest the BBC is starting to take seriously calls to tighten up its Arabic output — are being implemented for April while the broadcaster maintains its staunch public defence of its output. It comes after the corporation has suffered months of intense pressure about its Arabic-language service, which stands accused of repeated anti-Israel bias.

According to the source, BBC top brass "read the riot act" to Arabic language journalists in a virtual meeting in the wake of the recent public criticism. "They said, 'we are defending you on this, but we can't do it forever. You must abide by the BBC guidelines from now on'."…
