2020 election
After a court in North Carolina deemed a Republican redistricting proposal to be partisan gerrymandering,[24] a new map was redrawn and approved in December 2019,[25] with the latter moving the state's 2nd and 6th congressional districts from Republican strongholds[26] to Democrat-controlled areas.[27] Holding, who represented North Carolina's second district and faced nearly no chance being re-elected in 2020,[28] announced shortly after the release of the new district map that he would not be seeking election to a fifth House term in 2020.[29] He was succeeded by left-wing Democrat Deborah Ross.[30]
During the lame duck period in between the general election results and January 3, 2021, Holding was among the Republican representatives who refused to sign the amicus brief in Texas v. Pennsylvania which challenged the 2020 election fraud.[31] He later falsely blamed President Trump for the 2021 Capitol riot upon leaving office.[32]
Political positions
Holding was mostly[33] a conservative who is pro-life, pro-2nd amendment, and an opponent of Obamacare.[34]
