Koine Greek
Koine Greek (Ελληνιστική Κοινή, Biblical Greek, New Testament Greek, "common Greek", or ἡ κοινὴ διάλεκτος, "the common dialect") is the form of Greek commonly spoken in Palestine and even Rome in the 1st century A.D. during Jesus's ministry, and centuries before and after.
Most of the New Testament was written in Koine Greek, except Luke's more elegant works, the Epistle to the Hebrews (which was written at the very highest level of Greek found anywhere), and several of Paul's letters as written with more sophistication than Koine Greek.
Koine Greek was used in the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Old Testament.
It is a common misconception that modern Greek is the same language that was spoken two thousand years ago - this is not the case - modern Greek and Koine Greek have various differences.
Learning Koine Greek for better understanding of the New Testament
Learning Koine Greek is an excellent way to significantly enhance your understanding of the New Testament, as it allows one to directly engage with the original language the text was written in which can provide deeper insight into the nuances of meaning and context beyond just translations; this is particularly beneficial for serious Bible study, theological exploration, and pastoral work.
The time it takes to learn Koine Greek depends on how much time and effort you put into it, but it can take anywhere from a few months to several years. Learning Greek is an excellent lifelong endeavor, and there's always more to learn. Koine Greek is not that far from Modern Greek. The U.S. Department of State's Foreign Service Institute estimates that it takes about 44 weeks or 1,100 hours of practice to become fluent in Greek
