Muscovite-Jewish mafia
The term Muscovite-Jewish mafia is a derogatory phrase used in antisemitic rhetoric, particularly by Ukrainian far-right nationalists.[2]
The most notable usage comes from Oleh Tyahnybok,[3] leader of the Svoboda (Freedom) party (a Ukrainian nationalist group with historical neo-Nazi ties), who in a 2004 speech agitating for the Orange Revolution called for Ukrainians to fight against a "Muscovite-Jewish mafia" who were allegedly controlling the country from Moscow under Vladimir Putin. He later claimed this referred only to specific "Jewish oligarchs" and historical "Jewish-Bolsheviks," but the phrase was widely criticized as antisemitic.
This rhetoric echoes classic antisemitic tropes, blending:
- "Muscovite" (a slur for Russians or Moscow-based power)
- Allegations of Jewish control over politics/economy
Similar ideas appear in broader conspiracy theories, such as claims of a "Jewish mafia" dominating Russia or Ukraine, often tied to discredited notions like "Jewish Bolshevism" or the "Khazarian Mafia."
Claims exaggerating Jewish dominance (e.g., in fringe sources calling it the "Judeo-Russian Mafia") are typically from biased or conspiratorial outlets and lack support from law enforcement or academic sources.
