The western military alliance of [[NATO]] began in 1949 and played a much greater role in US foreign policy commitments and decisions during the [[Cold War]] than the UN ever did. The one exception was the [[Korean War]], which was fought under UN auspices since the Soviet Union was boycotting the UN in 1950.

The first UN secretary-general, Trygve Lie of Norway, was a socialist and Stalinist sympathizer. When Lie was the Minister of Justice in Norway, he told Lenin’s former right-hand man Leon Trotsky not to criticize Stalin or else he would be imprisoned and or kicked out of Norway. Lie eventually put him in prison, but later according to Stalin’s wishes exiled him to Mexico where one of Stalin’s hit men assassinated him by hitting his head with a pick ax in 1940. As secretary-general, he failed to maintain peace in the 1947 Kashmir conflict, the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict, and the Korean War from 1950-53.
