It is thought to be named after the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, although he never used nor sought to perpetuate the term. The popular legend is that he ordered bread and meat one eveing during an extended card game. When the victuals arrived, he sliced the bread and meat and 'sandwiched' the bread between the meat, so that he could carry on eating and playing. In fact sandwiches had existed long before the birth of Lord Sandwich. In fact the earliest known example of a sandwich is thought to be the [[Paschal lamb]] and [[matzo]] combination eaten by [[Hillel the Elder]] at Passover. It is likely that [[Jesus]] ate sandwiches.
