Rubio won the Florida Senate seat in the [[2010 midterm elections]]. He defeated [[moderate Republican]] [[Charlie Crist]] in the primary. Until April 2010 when Crist decided to drop out of the Republican primary and run as a Independent candidate. Democrat Kendrick Meek finished third.
