Thanks for the welcome DavidB4! If you have a gmail account, you could probably try pinging the pop3 server in cmd.exe to answer your question.--LawfulLibertarian (talk) 21:10, 8 January 2020 (EST)
- Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately, I don't have a gmail account (I don't trust Google) so I can't do that. However, I was tinkering with another popular email provider at one point, and it did technically support POP3 and IMAP, but when I authenticated and tried to sync, I was only given one email. When I looked at it, it turned out to be an automated message from the email service provider telling me that I could only access emails using their proprietary app. If Google does a similar thing, then there would indeed still be a server there which would respond ("pong") to pings, but if I was to actually try using it, I would be disappointed.
- I think the only way to test this would be with a valid gmail account, trying to link it to a 3rd party email program (such as Thunderbird). I suppose I could make an account just for that purpose, but I generally don't like to waste address space. --DavidB4 (TALK) 21:47, 8 January 2020 (EST)
- I can't blame you in the slightest for not going for Google- their silent removal of "do no evil" from their website is probably the most honest thing they ever did. I obviously also lack any form of account with them. It's fortunate that DuckDuckGo exists.--LawfulLibertarian (talk) 22:13, 8 January 2020 (EST)
- That's interesting...I didn't know they had removed that slogan. It is indeed fortunate that numerous alternatives exist for pretty much everything Google offers!
- In regard to you needing to answer a question to save each edit, unfortunately I think you are going to need to put up with that for awhile. Generally only senior editors get to bypass it. I know it's a nuisance...sorry about that. --DavidB4 (TALK) 23:08, 8 January 2020 (EST)
