I've been reading the book "Red Star Rogue," by Kenneth Sewell and Clint Richmond. They purport that the mystery explosion was the result of a rogue attempt to carry out a unauthorized nuclear missile strike on the USA. They say that the R-21 missiles onboard were equipped with a "fail safe" self-destruct system, likely shared with Russia by the United States. (The US did develop with such a fail-safe device, and documentation indicates that they intended to share it with Russia, but there are no records indicating whether or not it was actually shared.) Anyway, this book states that, likely without cooperation from the captain, they attempted to fire on Perl Harbor. Their attempt then failed to satisfy the fail-safe device (perhaps because they had incomplete or inaccurate codes), causing it to asymmetrically detonate the warhead's charge in a non-nuclear detonation. Of course, I can't properly summarize an entire book in one paragraph.
I haven't seen these claims anywhere else. Any thoughts on this? Is this all made up? Or is there potential merit to this? --DavidB4 (TALK) 02:29, July 10, 2024 (EDT)
- It's an interesting story, and worth taking a look at. You need some understanding of Soviet nuclear doctrine at the time, which unfortunately has always been distorted in Western media and propaganda. There isn't 'one man with his finger on the button' as the United States. Soviet, and now Russian, commanders have always been trained to make decisions American presidents are supposed to have the skill set to handle. RobSThe Truth.
