A member of the Democrat Party, Perez was the United States Secretary of Labor under Barack Obama from 2013 to 2017. Prior to that, he served as the Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice.

Perez was backed by the Obama/Clinton faction of the Democrat Party running against Rep. Keith Ellison, who was endorsed by Bernie Sanders.
