He is a member of the Republican Party and throughout the current Congress has voted with a majority of his Republican colleagues eight-three percent of the time.[1] He was elected as a Representative in 1974 January 3, 1981 when he was elected United States Senator.[2] He is the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee and is influential in health care negotiations.
