Mariannette Miller-Meeks (born September 6, 1955 (age 70)) is a U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel, conservative Republican, and Iowa state senator currently running for United States House of Representatives from the state's 2nd congressional district in the 2020 elections to replace the Democrat David Loebsack. She previously challenged Loebsack multiple times unsuccessfully.[1]
2020 U.S. House election in Iowa's 2nd district
Months following Loebsack's announcement that he would not seek re-election in 2020,[2] Miller-Meeks announced in early October 2019 her run for the seat.[1][3][4] She won her party's primary with a plurality of 58% of the votes cast,[5] and will face Democrat Rita Hart in the general election.[6] Hart has been backed the DCCC,[7] and Miller-Meeks received the endorsements of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy,[8] Sen. Joni Ernst,[9] as well as a law enforcement coalition.[10] The election is considered by the Cook Political Report,[11] Politico,[12] and RCP[13] to be a "tossup". The district was narrowly carried by Donald Trump in the 2016 U.S. presidential election by four percentage points.[14]
A debate between Miller-Meeks and Hart was held on October 8, 2020.[15]
