Messner's bid has received the endorsements of Sen. Rand Paul[1] and President Trump.[2] The latter's endorsement that was several months prior to the Republican primary election sparked criticism from Messner's then-primary opponent Don Bolduc, who claimed that the primary was rigged against him.[3] Messner ultimately won the primary by a handy margin to face Shaheen in the general election;[4] Bolduc conceded,[5] though openly refused to endorse him for the general election.[6]

Political views

Messner is a libertarian-leaning conservative who is pro-life and has expressed support for bringing U.S. troops out of the Middle East.[7]

Controversies

Messner reportedly was accused of domestic violence in 2006.[8]

A criminal probe was briefly sought into a foundation run by Messner;[9] a third-party audit later found no wrongdoing.[10]
