Mark Cooney Curran, Jr. (born April 4, 1963 (age 63)) is an Illinois attorney and former Democrat who served as the sheriff of Lake County from 2006 to 2018. He unsuccessfully ran for U.S. Senate from the state in the 2020 election to challenge incumbent leftist Richard Durbin.
While serving as sheriff, he has prosecuted street gangs and made efforts to combat gang violence.[1]
Following the 2020 Leftwing insurrection, Curran wrote an op-ed for RCP calling for taking "politics out of policing".[2]
2020 Senate bid
Curran announced in August 2019 his run to unseat Sen. Dick Durbin.[3] Running in a deep blue state, the incumbent senator is expected to easily hold his seat.[4]
Republican primary
Curran won his party's primary election held in March 2020, defeating several opponents with a plurality of just over 40% of the vote.[5]
Issues
While mostly conservative, Curran supports DACA and applauded a Supreme Court ruling prevent the Trump Administration from ending the program.[6]
Curran faced strong criticism from Sen. Durbin after criticizing John Lewis' strong pro-abortion viewpoints following the latter's death.[7]
