Martha's Vineyard is a summer playground for wealthy liberals, featuring overpriced dilapidated cottages on an island off Massachusetts. A smaller island named Chappaquiddick is nearby and where the married Senator Ted Kennedy's sexy female companion for an evening was found suffocated in a car he was driving, upside down in a few feet of water. The Chappaquiddick incident shocked the nation.
The cost of living on the island is 60 percent higher than the national average, and housing prices are 96 percent higher.[1] The year-round working population of Martha's Vineyard earns 30 percent less on average than other residents of Massachusetts while keeping up with a cost of living that is 60 percent higher than average,[2] leading to a stark example of severe income inequalities between year-round residents and their seasonal counterparts.[3][4]
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, an enthusiastic supporter of the 2009 anti-capitalist Occupy Wall Street protests, held meetings with her Wall Street donors and CEOs in Martha's Vineyard.[5]
In 2018 a woman at a party in Martha's Vineyard threatened to stab famed attorney and author Alan Dershowitz in the heart for his refusal to support "impeachment" of President Donald Trump.[6]
In late 2019, the Obama family bought a mansion in Martha's Vineyard for $11.75 million.[7] Despite Obama's opposition to Trump's plan to build a wall along the U.S.–Mexico border in order to secure it, it was reported in early 2017 that he was building a wall around his new mansion, obviously to keep unwanted people out.[8] The oceanfront property has magnificent views of the sea, which Obama claimed were rising due to climate change.
